Devices like Google’s Chromebook has its appeal in simplicity. You don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to buy it; it’s lightweight both physically and internally and the interface can be mastered in an afternoon. Chromebooks, for all intensive purposes, is designed for browsing, multimedia and word processing. Unfortunately, Chromebooks often lack the functionality for some of the most popular apps, like Apple’s iTunes.

Apple’s iTunes gives you a platform for your music and, with your permission, give it access to other devices. For example, if you wanted to, say, listen to your iTunes library on another computer, then you would install it to that computer, sign in with your information and there you have it – all of your music ready to jam out to. But that isn’t the case with Chromebooks. Chrome OS lacks the compatibility to run Apple’s iTunes.

Maybe one day you’ll see Apple’s iTunes on your Chromebook, but that day is not today and you’ll have to resort to a confusing and yet, simple way of accessing your iTunes library. All is not lost. Start by installing Google Play Music to your Chromebook and yes, Google Play Music is available for download on Chromebooks.

Before you get started, you should know that you’ll need a payment method (it’s free to use Google Play Music, but it wants to verify location) and you’ll need a computer with iTunes already installed. Once you have both, you can move on with the steps below.

Installing Google Play Music to your Chromebook

The reason you need Google Play Music is because your iTunes library is going to make its way to Google Play Music. And since Google Play Music is available on your Chromebook, you’ll then have access to your entire iTunes library, technically speaking. It isn’t access through iTunes, but rather, transferring your music over. It’s a clever way of working around the compatibility problem, one that should be commended.

If you already have Google Play Music installed to your Chromebook, then that’s great. You can skip this section entirely and head to the next section. But for those that don’t have Google Play Music, stick around.

Here’s what you do:

1. Head on over to the Chrome Web Store using your Google Chrome web browser.

2. In the search field in the top left corner of the page, click it and type “Google Play Music,” and search for it. If you’re having trouble finding it (it doesn’t seem to show as the first result) then you can just use this link to Google Play Music.

3. On the extension’s information page, click Add to Chrome.

4. Google Chrome will throw up a window, asking if Google Play Music can do the following listed in the window. If you’re okay with the warning, then click Add app. If you aren’t, then you are welcome to cancel it. Give the application a few moments to install to your Chromebook.

With Google Play Music installed, you can move on to activating your Google Play Music service. You’ll have to provide a form of payment, so if you have a debit card or credit card, then get it out now. Fortunately, youaren’t being charged and a form of payment is only for the sake of verifying your location, specifically, your country of residence.

Activating Your Google Play Music Service

It was already said, but it’s worth mentioning again: you will not be charged for anything when you activate your Google Play Music service. It needs a form of payment to verifying your location. With that being said, it’s time to set up your Google Play Music service.

Start by doing this:

1. Open another browser tab in your Google Chrome web browser. Then head on over to Google Play Music’s homepage.

2. On Google Play Music’s homepage, you’ll notice a “hamburger” menu in the top left corner of the page, the icon that has three horizontal lines to the left of “Google Play Music” logo. Go ahead and click it. Doing so will open a panel on the left hand side.

3. In the menu on the left, head down to Upload music. You can find it near the bottom. Clicking it will redirect you to a new window.

4. The next page is just an overview of what Google Play Music can do for you. You can click Next.

5. And here’s where your form of payment comes into play. Click ADD CARD. Google Play Music would like to verify your country of residence by way of a payment method, whether that be a credit card or debit card, it doesn’t matter as long as Google accepts the form used. You can also use PayPal or Redeem a gift.

  • Google Play Music accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Discover (U.S. only), JCB (Japan and U.S. only), and Visa Electron (outside the U.S. only).
  • If you already had a payment method linked to Google Play Music, then this step will process immediately.

6. Once you’ve chosen your payment method and provided all the correct information, click ACTIVATE. You’ll have noticed that activating Google Play Music is of no cost to you.

7. Google Play Music will provide genres and artists to choose from just to get a feel for the music you like, but that is entirely optional. You can skip it with consequence; it has no play in accessing your iTunes library. If you do, click NEXT when you’re finished.

What You’ve Been Waiting For

Now that Google Play Music has been installed and the service has been activated on your Chromebook, you’ll have a way of accessing your iTunes library through the power of copying. But this part of the equation requires the use of another computer, one with Google Chrome installed as well as the Google Play Music extension installed. Look under the section, “Installing Google Play Music to your Chromebook,” for steps on installing Google Play Music on another computer. The steps work on every OS.

Once you have Google Chrome and Google Play Music installed on the 2nd computer with your iTunes library, here’s what you do:

1. With your 2nd computer, not your Chromebook, locate and launch Google Chrome and make your way to the Google Play Music homepage.

2. Click the “hamburger” menu icon again, indicated by three horizontal lines, located in the top left corner of the page and to the left of “Google Play Music.”

3. After the left hand panel opens up, head back down to Upload music and click it. This time you’ll see a new option, one that wasn’t present when you activated your Google Play Music service: Add music. Go ahead and click it.

Now, the next steps are dependant on your operating system. If you are using a Windows PC, then head down to Step 4. If you are using a Mac OS computer, head down to Step 5.

4. Locate the music files on your computer. Since you’re pulling these from your iTunes library on your computer, the default location of your music should be in Users > [username] > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Music.

5. Locate the music files on your computer. Because you’re pulling from your iTunes library, all your music should be in one location and, by default, that can be found in Users > [username] > Music > iTunes.

6. Regardless of the OS you used, your music will now upload to your Google Play Music account. To access it, just head over to Google Play Music with your Chromebook after your music is done uploading. Click the “hamburger” menu one last time and then click Music library.
