Of its 14 stories, 7 are likely to linger in your mind for weeks afterward. One, 'The Man from Mars,' lingers for years, as I happen to know from having read it long ago in The Ontario Review. Another is arresting because it creates, in effect, a brand new verb tense, a sort of future-turning-imperceptibly-in to-present. Characters in a book are sometimes loved or hated by readers. Sometimes this hate or love for a character will transform into the opposite, hate into love, and love into hate. Simply because as the story went with the character it started to evolve and transform before the reader 's eyes. Once they think they know everything about a character, something different and shocking will happen to prove the fact wrong. In the story, “The Man From Mars” by Margaret Atwood, the main character, Christine goes through a transformation from the beginning of the story to the end. Throughout her life nobody gave Christine a second glance when it came to dating. Until one day she helped a foreigner and suddenly he started to stalk her. Christine starts off as a plain young woman who turns into this mysterious, attractive, and authoritative young adult.Christine is considered to be plain compared to her other sisters and mother meaning that she does not get a lot of attention from the opposite sex. In fact Atwood went on to describe, “Her chunky reddish face, exposed with no softening fringe, looked like a Russian peasant’s. . .” (16). with this description in mind, it is easy to picture Christine as a very unattractive female who may look more like the opposite gender. This allows the reader to think that she would not have any boyfriends or past relationships with her looks alone. The reader could also imagine that she could be bullied for her appearance as being considered plain. Plain being that she is a toned down, and understated appearance. Going with these thoughts it was not surprising when Atwood revealed, “To her male friends she was the one who could be relied on” (27). This proves the theory that she did not have many males who show... middle of paper ...to change mentally, emotionally, physically, and sometimes spiritually. Everybody has the ability to change those around them for the better of for the worse. People are mostly put into groups of leaders and followers. In this story by Margaret Atwood, “The Man From Mars”, Christine seems to decrease mentally and physically. However, she seems to improve emotionally, when she is able to get a control on her sudden obsession with her stalker. Mentally she let herself fall into this pit of worrying and always wondering about where her stalker went. She lost a part of her mentality at the end along with letting herself go physically. The above is my main reaction and thoughts to this story. To make it better the author could have maybe did a more detailed insert about what happened to him. She definitely, the author, leaves the readers hanging with that part at the end.
